Car Leasing 301 - Lease Contracts

Car lease contracts, similar to any contract or agreement you sign, should be reviewed prior to engaging in any negotiating with the other party, or in this case the car dealership. This will give you the time necessary to review and get comfortable with the vehicle you’re about to sign onto a 24-48 year agreement.

Before getting into any car lease agreement or contract, there are a few key areas you should be aware of as a consumer.

  • Wear and Tear (excessive)
  • Disclosure Statement
  • Excess Mileage
  • Insurance
  • Early Termination (define: early termination)
  • Stolen or Written-off Vehicle

Excessive Wear and Tear on the Vehicle

All leasing agreements the consumer holds with the leasing company state the car, truck, etc. must be returned at the expiration of the lease agreement with no excess of ‘normal’ wear and tear of the vehicle. When reviewing the contract, look over how the leasing company has defined ‘wear and tear’ of the vehicle. Most leasing companies provide a good explanation of this description – though be familiar with it as it may remind you how you drive your vehicle when you’re on the road. The general definition of ‘normal’ wear and tear is for the lessee (define: lessee) to take good care of the vehicle over the duration of the lease term and retain a regular maintenance schedule.

Typically before you return the car to the leasing company at the end of your lease agreement, any major repairs required, such as body damage, weathered tires, odd noises under the hood, etc. should be repaired before returning the car. This goes beyond ‘normal’ wear and tear.
